End Citizens United has been established since March 1st, 2015, and it is a Political Action Committee that is being funded by grassroots donors. They are dedicating their support for their cause to countering the catastrophic effects of End Citizens United and reforming their campaign finance system. Their motto is to show voters, elected officials, candidates, and the press that public is fighting back with force against an increasing brazenness of the wealthy individuals who are trying to purchase the elections. That would be a key to building a broad coalition working towards the campaign finance reform and compelling lawmakers to take immediate action for that.
Their mission is to combat big money in politics and to dismantle the rigged political system by passing state ballot measures and electing campaign finance reform champions. Such champions will certainly work toward overturning the Citizens United, ending infinite money in politics, and ending the dark money. The group, End Citizens United, officially launched in August 2015, has raised more than two million dollars from small donors so far and this group is on track to rake in a sum of approx. US$25 million to $30 million for the whole cycle, as being said by Richard Carbo, their communications director.
The ultimate goal of this group is to pass a legal amendment to reverse the decision of Supreme Court for Citizens United, which in 2010 gave rise to a super PACs and released a tidal wave of dark money into the politics. So far, more than 0.3 million individuals have signed the petition for End Citizens United demanding Congress to pass such legislation. This number is likely to get a boost, as End Citizens United has partnered with “Ready for Hillary” and is going to rent out the email list which includes around 4 million people to reach out to the possible liberal supporters.
While there’ve been other PACs which focus on the reform, their communications director said that this group is unlike other because “there was a hole in conversation addressing a political side of it and getting contestants elected” who can change the laws that exist since very long time with no change. This group plans on setting up a free expenditure arm sometime this year to financially back the candidates with the help of initiatives including direct mailers, television ads, and polling. While End Citizens United hopes to assist them to pass campaign finance reforms on the local as well as on the state level, its primary objective of passing a legitimate amendment to overturn the Supreme Court decision that has made in 2010. A legal amendment, after all, should win consent from 2/3 of the House and the Senate, in addition to being sanctioned by 3/4th of the states.
